Electromagnetic Sensitivity (EMS)

Electromagnetic Safety

Idaho is a beautiful and scenic state with a population of 1.7 million people.

An estimated 3 to 10 percent of Idahoans (48,000 to 160,000) suffer devastating, life-altering symptoms of electromagnetic sensitivity [EMS].1

It is estimated that another approximately 35 percent of Idaho’s population experiences mild to moderate EMS symptoms.

EMS is defined by medical experts as a chronic, multi-system, inflammatory syndrome triggered by environmental stressors, especially man-made electromagnetic fields.3

EMS is a growing problem across the USA and around the globe.

In Taiwan, for example, 13.3% of the population reported symptoms of EMS.

Three percent of the world’s 7.2 billion population is 216,000,000 people with EMS.4

EMS can affect people of all ages.

The symptoms are as individual as the people who suffer from it.

EMS can afflict a person SUDDENLY, after acute electromagnetic exposure.

Or, it may develop INCREMENTALLY, over time, from chronic electromagnetic exposure.

EMS leads to functional impairment when people allergic to man-made environmental stressors are unable to access areas of public accommodation, transportation and housing.

Many EMS symptoms are discussed in advertisements for commonly-sought medications. Some medical experts and scientists postulate that, given the massive amount of electromagnetic pollution now in the environment, almost everyone suffers from one or more manifestations of EMS. Because there are thousands of published scientific papers on the deleterious biological effects of electromagnetic fields –especially high-frequency microwaves used for wireless technologies– it is possible that there are two groups of EMS-affected people: those who UNDERSTAND that electromagnetic fields cause their symptoms and those who DON’T YET RECOGNIZE the connection.

The reported symptoms5 of EMS include:

  • flu-like symptoms chronic fatigue sleep disturbances
  • gastrointestinal abnormalities heart palpitations depression headaches
  • skin rash difficulty concentrating loss of memory
  • nerve and soft tissue pain frequent infections
  • loss of hearing visual disturbances dizziness tinnitus
  • impaired balance feeling of vibration night sweats nose bleeds
  • irritability thyroid malfunction weight abnormalities, joint and limb pain nausea loss of appetite, chronic sinusitis frequent urge to urinate lymph node swelling adrenal imbalance blood sugar swings severe chemical allergies.

Medical experts who specialize in EMS report that many people can REVERSE their EMS symptoms if they identify the environmental causes and avoid exposure to toxic triggers. They also caution that if people IGNORE their symptoms indefinitely, EMS can become a chronic and irreversible syndrome, possibly leading to serious conditions such as dementia, diabetes and even cancer.6

Susan Arima is an Idaho woman who took her EMS symptoms seriously, did her research and reversed her environmental toxicity before her health problems became chronic and life-changing. Click her picture to read her story.

In 2016, researchers in India did a medical survey among professionals who work for information technology (IT) companies. All of these people, both male and female, use cell phones. Most of them also use: wireless computer networks, Bluetooth headsets, Wi-Fi, cordless phones and microwave ovens. The survey revealed that a large percentage of these people working in high radiofrequency electromagnetic fields report suffering from EMS symptoms, although the symptoms were not recognized as such.\7\

For example, 69.5 percent of the women reported frequent headaches, 39 percent noted severe pain in teeth and deteriorated fillings, 21.7 percent reported tremors, 41.9 percent suffer poor short memory, 48.9 percent reported severe irritability and 36 percent admitted to difficulty sleeping. Other EMS symptoms reported by the surveyed group include: allergies, crushing fatigue, hair loss, dry mucous membranes, severe and chronic pain, difficulty concentrating, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, dizziness and depression. It is likely that people everywhere, who are continuously exposed to high levels of man-made electromagnetic fields, are suffering from classical EMS symptoms without realizing that their ill-health is a manifestation of a universal syndrome.

Manmade electromagnetic fields of multiple types

trigger electromagnetic sensitivity (EMS) symptoms, including:

  1. Electrical currents

  2. Magnetic pulses which are generated by electrical currents

In today’s world everyone is exposed to three types of EMFs:

  1. Extremely low frequencies from electrical and electronic appliances and power lines (this includes dirty electricity in the kilohertz range)

  2. Radiofrequency and microwave radiation from communications antennas, wireless devices, Wi-Fi systems, security scanners, radio/TV broadcast sources

  3. Millimeter waves which include 5G, radar and satellite transmissions

Frequencies across the electromagnetic spectrum are now classified as Group 2B Carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). As a body of the World Health Organization, IARC is a multinational group composed of the world’s leading cancer experts.

  1. In 2001, IARC classifed ELF electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic and designated this radiation in the same 2B category as DDT and lead.1 In 2002, the California Department of Health announced that its multi-million dollar studies confirmed that ELF electromagnetic fields are linked to childhood leukemia, adult brain cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and miscarriages.2

  2. In 2011, IARC classified the radiofrequency and microwave bands of the electromagnetic spectrum as \p\ossibly carcinogenic, placing these frequencies in the Group 2B category. This designation is based on numerous and recent studies showing that long-term exposure to cell phone radiation ca\n\ lead to various types of tumors, including glioma brain cancer and acoustic neuroma, a (usually benign) tumor of the auditory nerve.**3\

EMS, the precursor of serious inflammatory conditions, can be triggered by toxic electromagnetic energy across the spectrum, including: ELF, kilohertz, megahertz, gigahertz and terahertz radiation.

Multiple EMS symptoms are reported from both acute and chronic exposure to electromagnetic sources, including:

Power lines and transformers near homes

Electric milligauss (ELF) exposure from electronic devices

Dirty electricity in the kilohertz spectrum

“Smart” utility meters and smart household appliances which emit both dirty electricity and microwaves

Cell phones and smart phones which emit both ELF and microwaves

Cordless landline phones and base stations which emit ELF and microwaves

Computers improperly grounded, especially including those with Wi-Fi

Wireless tablets which emit ELF and microwaves from multiple antennas

Bluetooth headsets and other wireless wearables which emit ELF and microwaves

Wi-Fi microwave signals from computers, routers, access points and a thousand types of wireless gadgets used for personal assistance inside of buildings and commercial transportation vehicles

Wireless entertainment systems which emit ELF and microwaves

Motors that generate low frequency electromagnetic signals

and microwave communications systems mounted inside of vehicles

Wireless security systems that microwave the interior of buildings

Cell tower and broadcast tower that propagate radiation across the spectrum

Rooftop and building-mounted 3G and 4G microwave antennas

5G (fifth generation wireless) is the newest assault:

New networks of satellite (Starlink) and balloon (Google microwave transmitters in the skies above all 50 US states, enable corporations to sell Internet signals anywhere

Also coming are new 5G small cell microwave and millimeter wave antennas, spaced every 200-300 feet across both urban and rural areas, for accommodation of: the Internet of Things, the Internet of Bodies and inescapable tracking and surveillance

Lamp post cellular antennas like this are now popping everywhere across Idaho for the new 5G Ultra Wideband technologies. **The Verizon antenna seen here emits experimental millimeter waves in the very high high gigahertz frequencies (over 24 billion hertz).\

Other types of 5G antennas are being mounted across Idaho by T-Mobile and AT&T. The day is coming when many Idahoans will wake up to 5G antennas systems like this in their front yards, with no notice given by wireless profiteers.

Wireless industry officials told the US Congress in 2019 that these super high frequency 5G emittersHAVE NOT BEEN TESTED TO ASSESS THEIR HEALTH EFFECTS ON HUMANSand that there are NO PUBLIC HEALTH STUDIES planned by the industry.

Click the picture below to see how AT&T is even planning to use America’s electrical grid to propagate high-band 5G radiation into inhabited buildings across the nation.

Dr. Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD

Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine

Dr. Golomb has an impressive research history on Gulf War Syndrome, statin drug side effects, oxidative stress and aging. She and her research group at the University of California San Diego are currently researching EMS. Dr. Golomb confirms that EMS is not only very real, but also extremely serious for many of those afflicted. She states:

“My research group at UC San Diego alone has received hundreds of communications from people who have developed serious health problems from electromagnetic radiation, following introduction of new technologies. Others with whom I am in communication have independently received hundreds of similar reports. Most likely these are a tip of an iceberg of tens or perhaps hundreds of thousands of affected persons. As each new technology leading to further exposure to electromagnetic radiation is introduced – and particularly introduced in a fashion that prevents vulnerable individuals from avoiding it – a new group becomes sensitized to health effects. This is particularly true for pulsed signals in the radiowave and microwave portion of the spectrum….

“Mechanisms by which health effects are exerted have been shown to include oxidative stress (the type of injury against which antioxidants protect), damage to mitochondria (the energy producing parts of cells), damage to cell membranes, and via these mechanisms, an impaired “blood brain barrier” (the blood brain barrier defends the brain against introduction of foreign substances and toxins; additionally, disruption can lead to brain edema), constriction of blood vessels and impaired blood flow to the brain and triggering of autoimmune reactions. Following a large exposure that depresses antioxidant defenses, magnifying vulnerability to future exposures, some persons no longer tolerate many other forms and intensities of electromagnetic radiation that previously caused them no problem, and that currently cause others no problem.

“But this group deserves – nay needs \–\ the right to be able to avoid these exposures. Affected individuals not only experience “symptoms” that “merely” cause them distress and suffering, when they are exposed – symptoms like headaches, ringing ears, chest pain from impaired blood flow, heart rhythm abnormalities, and inability to sleep. These symptoms arise from physiological injury. Moreover, many experience significant health problems that can include seizures, heart failure, hearing loss and severe cognitive impairment. The mechanisms involved are those also involved in development and progression of neurodegenerative conditions including Alzheimer’s disease.”

The Europaem is an international organization of thirteen leading European Universities, representing ten nations. These groups have united to advance education, academic conferences and research. Europaem stands for European Academy of Environmental Medicine.

Europaem has an EMF Working Group, convened to address the exploding EMS crisis across the globe. In late 2015, this working group of 15 medical specialists published a cutting edge report titled:

This report contains valuable and up-to-date information on EMS. The Working Group, who represent a number of prestigious medical institutions, state:

“We recommend treating EMS clinically as part of a group of chronic multi-system illnesses (CMI) leading to functional impairment (EMS), but still recognizing that the underlying cause remains the environment.”

The Working Group confirms that chronic diseases and illnesses are on the rise and that it is necessary to take “new exposures” like electromagnetic fields into account:

“Studies, empirical observations and patient reports clearly indicate interactions between EMF and health problems….It is suspected that environmental conditions such as the increasing exposure of the population to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) like radiofrequency radiation (RF), emanating from cordless phones (DECT), mobile phone base stations and cell phones (GSM, GPRS, UMTS, LTE), especially smart phones, data cards for laptop and notebook computers, wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) wireless and powerline communication-based smart meters, but also exposure to extremely low frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields, including ‘dirty electricity’ emanating from disturbances on the electric wiring, power lines, electrical devices and other equipment, DO play a causal role in EMF-related health effects.”

The Working Group states that wireless technologies in use today were improperly investigated before being sold to consumers:

“New wireless technologies and applications have been introduced without any certainty about their health effects, raising new challenges for medicine and society. For instance, the issue of so-called non-thermal effects and potential long-term effects of low-dose exposure were scarcely investigated prior to the introduction of those technologies.”

The Working Group reports that there is increasing acknowledgement of EMS around the world:

“On the one hand, there is strong evidence that long-term exposure to certain EMF exposures is a risk factor for certain cancers, Alzheimer’s disease and male infertility. On the other hand, the emerging electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EMS) is more and more recognized by health authorities, disability administrators and case workers, politicians as well as courts of law.”

The Working Group confirms that, in addition to being the root cause of EMS, electromagnetic frequency exposures are now linked by medical science to pathophysiological cascades leading to peroxynitrite formation (the most damaging molecule in the body). The Group also confirms that EMF exposures are linked to:

Various cancers:

  • Brain damage and degeneration
  • Learning and behavior deficits
  • Increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease
  • Infertility and reproductive disorders
  • Severe allergies, including asthma
  • Chronic systemic inflammation
  • Neurodegeneration and increased risk for multiple sclerosis
  • Increased multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS)

The Working Group recommends:

“The primary method of treatment should mainly focus on the prevention or reduction of EMF exposure, that is, reducing or eliminating all sources of EMF at home and in the workplace. The reduction of EMF exposure should also be extended to public spaces such as schools, hospitals, public transport, and libraries to enable persons with EMS an unhindered use (accessibility measure). If a detrimental EMF exposure is reduced sufficiently, the body has a chance to recover and EMS symptoms will be reduced or even disappear. Many examples have shown that such measures can prove effective.”

The AAEM is an international association of physicians and associated professionals interested in the clinical aspects of ecological and environmental illnesses. Based in Wichita, Kansas, the academy aims for recognition of ecological illness as a medical diagnosis. Composed primarily of traditionally-trained M.D. and D.O. physicians from many specialties, the principal goals of the AAEM are physician education and the expansion of medical knowledge about often-overlooked effects on human health of environmental exposures encountered in everyday life. Physicians of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine recognize that patients are adversely impacted by electromagnetic frequency (EMF) and radiofrequency (RF) fields and that increasing numbers of people are suffering from electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EMS). The AAEM recommends that physicians consider patients’ total electromagnetic exposure in their diagnosis and treatment, as well as recognition that electromagnetic and radiofrequency field exposure may be an underlying cause of a patient’s disease process. AAEM says this: Based on double‐blinded, placebo controlled research in humans medical conditions and disabilities that would more than likely benefit from avoiding electromagnetic and radiofrequency exposure include, but are not limited to:

  • Neurological conditions such as paresthesias [peripheral nerve pain], somnolence [drowsiness], cephalgia [headache], dizziness, unconsciousness and depression
  • Musculoskeletal effects, including pain, muscle tightness, spasm, fibrillation\
  • Heart disease and vascular effects including arrhythmia, tachycardia, flushing and edema
  • Pulmonary conditions including chest tightness, dyspnea, decreased pulmonary function
  • Gastrointestinal conditions including nausea, belching\
  • Ocular (burning)
  • Oral (pressure in ears, tooth pain)
  • Dermal (itching, burning, pain)
  • Autonomic nervous system dysfunction (dysautonomia) Based on numerous studies showing harmful biological effects from EMF and RF exposure, medical conditions and disabilities that would more than likely benefit from avoiding exposure include, but are not limited to:
  • Neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)

  • Neurological conditions including: headaches, depression, sleep disruption, fatigue, dizziness, tremors, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, decreased memory,\ \attention deficit disorder, anxiety, and visual disruption\

  • Fetal abnormalities and pregnancy\

  • Genetic defects and cancer\
  • Liver disease and genitourinary disease\

AAEM also states that because “smart” utility meters produce radiofrequency emissions, it is recommended that patients with any of the above conditions and disabilities be accommodated in the matter of having smart meters removed from their homes. AAEM’s 2012 statement on EHS is footnoted with 20 recent published medical studies which document severe adverse effects of electromagnetic fields on biological and especially neurological systems.

In late 2014, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) compiled an excellent document which summarizes the challenges of EMS. It states:

“More and more people suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity due to exposure to electromagnetic fields, following the expansion of technologies in recent years. In addition to their health problems, people in this growing group often face discrimination when entering many public or private facilities (libraries, hospitals or even public transport), especially in buildings where devices have been installed for transmitting wireless technology. These people usually have to suffer the incomprehension and scepticism\ **of doctors who are unaware of this syndrome’s existence and therefore fail to offer proper diagnosis and treatment. This is without considering all those other people who might be unaware of the possible reasons for their current health problems.”

As the global EMS problem accelerates, corporate interests which rake in huge profits from polluting the environment with toxic electromagnetic radiation, are working to cloud the EMS issue. Some groups with vested interests suggest that people with EMS mainly suffer from underlying psychological disorders. After all, they insinuate, only the “unhinged” would claim to develop allergic and inflammatory reactions to electromagnetic fields which are internationally recognized as a Group 2B carcinogen in the same category as toxic lead and DDT.2 However, even the Foundation for Research on Information Technologies (Zurich, Switzerland), which is lavishly funded by the huge global electrical and electronics consortium, admits this:

“Electromagnetic external sources such as mobile phones, induction heaters, power lines, and MRI and internal sources such as active medical implants induce electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the human body. Quantifying these fields is complex, particularly the non-correlated and non-homogeneous fields in the close near-field. Characterizing the field distribution is also complex as it strongly depends on a person’s posture, body shape and tissue distribution. Developing a basic understanding of the internal electromagnetic environment and the coupling mechanism is crucial for accurately identifying exposure-induced biological effects and for minimizing the potential health hazards of advanced and emerging technologies.”

As the EMS epidemic gains global momentum and as the debate widens, some of the world’s most accomplished medical experts and scientists are deeply involved in EMS research and treatment protocols. Many are developing and using scientific methodology to demonstrate that EMS is not a cognitive-behavioral problem. They are using clinical and epidemiological studies to prove that EMS is the physiological and organic result of complex wave pollution which triggers a panoply of biological responses. They are working to show that EMS can be reliably characterized and diagnosed with easily accessible bio-medical tests. Here are some of the most talented experts currently working to shed light on this escalating, environmentally-induced syndrome:

Dr. Dominique Belpomme, a leader in EMS research

Dr. Dominique Belpomme is a professor of oncology at Paris-Descartes University and president of the French Association for Research on Treatment Against Cancer (ARTAC). Author of numerous scientific papers, he is renown for his work on links between environmental degradation and the origins of disease. He also heads the European Cancer and Environment Research Institute (ECERI).

Since 2008, Dr. Belpomme’s medical team has studied many hundreds of European patients who suffer from electromagnetic intolerance syndrome. The team has developed EMS diagnostic methods based on blood tests and special brain scans (pulsed Doppler echography). Their research shows multiple abnormalities in blood and tissue. At least 30% of EMS sufferers have high levels of histamine, indicating severe allergic reactions. Fifty percent show excessive stress proteins, 30% have levels of antibodies and proteins that are telltale signs of both thermal shock and even possible brain damage in the areas where Alzheimer’s starts. Most have low levels of melatonin (a crucial anti-cancer hormone).

In 2015, Dr. Belpomme’s group, along with the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine, sponsored an international conference titled: IDOPATHIC ENVIRONMENTAL INTOLERANCE: WHAT ROLE FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS AND CHEMICALS? Due to the ever-increasing upsurge in EMS cohorts globally, this prestigious medical conference generated a formal Declaration requesting that the World Health Organization update its work on both EMS and MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) and properly classify both of these conditions under the WHO International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Many people now suffer from both conditions simultaneously.

Read the Declaration

Dr. Belpomme states that both EMS and MCS can be objectively characterized and diagnosed with very simple tests. This is fortunate since the doctor also says: “Studies show that 10 to 50% of the population will become very intolerant to EMF’s over the next 25 to 50 years.” In December 2015, Dr. Belpomme’s latest research on the shocking extent of neurological inflammation induced by electro-magnetic fields was published in a medical journal *Reviews in Environmental Health.* He told the media in April 2016 that EMS is verifiably the result a complex cascade of organic effects and he confirmed: “This is not a psychiatric or psychosomatic illness.”

Dr. Olle Johansson, a brilliant pioneer in EMS research

Dr. Olle Johansson spent many years as associate professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. He was head of the Experimental Dermatology Unit within the Department of Neuroscience. As a leading authority in the field of electromagnetic radiation and health effects, he has published more than 600 original articles, reviews, book chapters and conference reports in the fields of neuroscience, dermatoscience, epidemiology and biophysiology.

Dr. Johansson says:

“It is evident that various biological alterations are present in electrohypersensitive persons. There must be an end to the pervasive nonchalance and lack of heartfelt respect for the plight of these persons. It is clear something serious has happened and is happening. Every aspect of electrohypersensitive peoples’ lives, including the ability to work productively in society, have healthy relations, and find permanent housing, is at stake. The basics of life are becoming increasingly inaccessible to a growing percentage of the world’s population. I strongly advise all governments take the issue of electromagnetic health hazards seriously and to take action while there is still time.”

Recognizing the numerous health risks inherent in wireless technologies, Dr. Johansson says that there is ever-increasing medical evidence that wireless communications technologies represent a serious danger to human health and longevity. He advises governments to decisively protect public health by updating public RF exposure standards to reflect the real biological effects, by aggressively researching microwave-associated medical conditions and by publishing the results.

Dr. Johansson has worked for decades to document the complex cascade of biological reactions suffered by people who become electrohypersensitive, with focus on the skin. His laboratory findings are so massive that he was able to contribute a comprehensive medical summary on how EMS ties in with the complex workings of the human immune system. This summary became part of the world-renown BioInitiative Report of 2007. He states that the current working hypothesis is that “electrohypersensitivity is a kind if irradiation damage, since the observed cellular changes are very much the same as the ones documented in tissue subjected to UV-light or ionizing radiation.”

### Dr. Igor Y. Belyaev, a master scientist and EMS researcher

Dr. Belyaev, with an education resume miles long, is a world class expert in the biological and health effects of electromagnetic fields and ionizing radiation, DNA damage and molecular markers for radiosensitivity. He received his doctorate degree in radiobiology at the Academy of Science in Moscow, Russia, where he is now a head research scientist. He is involved with cancer research at the Slovak Academy of Science; he maintains an associate professorship in the Dept. of Genetics, Microbiology and Toxicology at Stockholm University; he is a member of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection.

Dr. Belyaev has co-authored over 70 scientific publications. His scientific research into the effects of radiofrequency and microwaves reveals the numerous catastrophic impacts of wireless technologies on human health. His work shows conclusively that certain frequencies used for wireless technologies not only inflict massive cell damage, but also inhibit the body’s ability to repair that damage. This in itself could explain the huge global uptick of EMS within the last twenty years of wireless technological advancement.

His research and clinical experience leads Dr. Belyaev to advise that EMS is extremely tricky to diagnose and treat because the impact of electromagnetic stressors in the modern environment cause many diverse effects depending on: carrier frequencies, modulation, polarization, intermittance of exposure, wave coherence, time of exposure, static magnetic fields, stray fields, etc. At the same time, people vary uniquely by age, sex, genotype, cell density and also by the presence of immune factors, radical scavengers and antioxidants in their bodies. He explains that this is why every person tolerates electromagnetic exposures differently.

Dr. Belyaev advises that people who develop EMS require individualistic diagnostic evaluation which takes into account variations in physiology, as well as individual electromagnetic exposure parameters. These patients also need a good workup on their body levels of divalent metals, ROS (reactive oxygen species which produces free radicals) and antioxidants. The doctor says that if this information is accurately analyzed, it provides a mechanistic background for treatment based on chelating heavy metals, reducing ROS and balancing nutritional intake and vitamins.

Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy, EMS academic and author

Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy is an honorary lecturer in Biology at Imperial College London. He retired from full-time teaching in 2004 but still gives occasional lectures. His decades of research and teaching, extend from the physiology and biochemistry of photosynthesis and photorespiration through the biological effects of electromagnetically treated water to the electrophysiology of plants. He also designed an experiment for the Anglo-Russian ‘Juno’ space mission and is now a member of the Life Sciences Advisory Group for the European Space Agency.

Dr. Goldsworthy’s interest in the biological effects of electromagnetic fields dates back over 30 years. He has written numerous widely-acclaimed papers on the biological effects of weak electromagnetic fields. His research draws attention to the remarkable similarity between the symptoms of electrosensitivity and those of (low blood calcium). This is due to the well-documented fact that electromagnetic fields remove structural calcium from cell membranes to produce similar effects as hypocalcemia. Medical evidence indicates that electrosensitive individuals may already have a slightly low level of calcium in their blood when electromagnetic exposures “push them over the edge” into myriad distress symptoms. This raises the possibility that conventional treatments for hypocalcemia may be used to mitigate some of the symptoms of electrosensitivity in certain individuals.

No one more clearly and concisely explains the cellular and molecular effects of electromagnetic fields than Dr. Goldsworthy. He is especially expert at outlining the particularly destructive effects of extremely high frequency fields (radiofrequency and microwave radiation) which now encumber the human environment.

Dr. David O. Carpenter, professor of environmental health

Dr. David O. Carpenter, educated at Harvard Medical School, is a professor of environmental health and biomedical sciences. He is the founding dean of University at Albany School of Public Health. He has served on the National Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and he strongly advocates for the elimination of environmental contaminants, including pesticides, lead, PCBs, particulate air pollution and electromagnetic radiation.

In addition to his research on environmental contaminants, Dr. Carpenter studies animal models of stroke, neurodegenerative diseases and neurotoxic agents. He has long warned that children are especially susceptible to the deleterious effects of electromagnetic radiation. While advocating for wired classrooms, Dr. Carpenter warns that all wireless microwave technologies, especially Wi-Fi, has the potential to trigger EMS in certain individuals, which will continue for their lifetimes.

Dr. Erica Mallery-Blythe, EMS clinician and lecturer

Dr. Mallery-Blythe, who developed EMS herself while working in a toxic environment as a physician in the UK, has written and taught extensively on the devastating health effects of electromagnetic fields. Her prognosis for people with EMS is variable, but she says that full and permanent reversal of the condition is unlikely. However, remission of adverse symptoms is possible, even in very severe cases, if the individual is moved into a very pure environment (both chemically and electromagnetically). She confirms that clinical evidence shows that EMS symptoms will return if the person is re-exposed to electromagenetic stressors.

Dr. Mallery-Blythe advises that sleeping areas are the most critical for EMS patients and she advises that the sleeping environment be kept as EMF-free as possible. This requires the removal of all electronic devices and attention paid to the quality of household wiring. Electromagnetic fields that cannot be deactivated can sometimes be shielded so that the energy does not propagate into living and sleeping spaces.

She recommends these crucial steps to her EMS patients for the reduction of electromagnetic exposure:

  1. Use wireless devices only for emergencies and store them away from the body in off mode.
  2. Swap wireless Internet for Ethernet, using wired connections and disable all wireless capabilities on computers.
  3. Swap cordless landline phones for corded speaker phones.

Dr. Magda Havas, outstanding and prolific EMS researcher

Dr. Magda Havas, educated at a number of universities including Cornell, is Associate Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University in Ontario, Canada. She teaches and conducts research on the biological effects of environmental contaminants. She is an expert in acid rain and metal pollution and was instrumental in achieving clean air legislation for Canada. Since the 1990s, she has heavily researched the biological effects of electromagnetic pollution, including: radio frequency radiation, electromagnetic fields, dirty electricity, ground current and sick building syndrome, as it relates to power quality in schools.

Dr. Havas says that it is important to help people who have developed electrical hypersensitivity. She calls for wireless-free zone and for protection of school children who are at increased risk for developing hypersensitivity over their lifetimes. She advises that radio cellular antennas be kept away from communities. She has greatly advanced human studies on how electromagnetic pollution exacerbates the symptoms of diabetics, as well as multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. Dr. Havas is among the first to conduct and publish human provocation studies which demonstrate that microwave radiation from cordless phones can instantly abnormalize the heart rate of up to forty percent of persons exposed. Her studies provide strong indication that many people who suffer a wide range of maladies and conditions may actually be suffering EMS called by a different name.

Dr. Havas shares her knowledge globally. Her impressive lectures and seminars can be accessed through numerous videos available online.

Dr. Bray BASc MSc M.D. FCFP MHSc

Dr. Bray has a vast academic background in chemical engineering, pharmacology, environmental health and medicine, is the medical director at the Ontario Environmental Health Clinic (EHC) at the University of Toronto. She reports that the number of EMS patients seen at EHC has increased dramatically over the last 15 years. EMS is recognized as a disability under the Canadian Human Rights Commission as of 2007.

On August 16, 2016, Dr. Bray lectured on EMS at the E\cosphere Montreal Fair and World Social Forum, offering the latest information on the symptoms and treatment of EMS. Her lecture, titled Trials and Trends in Caring for Patients with Electromagnetic Hypersensitivities, provides valuable information on the ramifications of mass public exposure to electromagnetic pollution in the wireless age. Her PowerPoint charts are easy to understand and share.

An EMS report from European Doctors

The Freiburger Appeal provides valuable information on the numerous warning symptoms of EMS, and especially the Microwave Syndrome. First published in 2002 by a long list of German medical experts, this document explains how wireless microwave technology coincides with severe and chronic disease conditions seen in many of their patients. Here are some of the most important quotes from the Appeal:

“…We can see, especially after carefully-directed inquiry, a clear temporal and spatial correlation between the appearance of disease and exposure to pulsed high-frequency microwave radiation (HFMR)….We have observed, in recent years, a dramatic rise in severe and chronic diseases among our patients, especially:

Learning, concentration, and behavioral disorders (e.g. attention deficit disorder, ADHD)

Extreme fluctuations in blood pressure, ever harder to influence with medications

Heart rhythm disorders

Heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population

Brain-degenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s) and epilepsy

Cancerous afflictions: leukemia, brain tumors

“Moreover, we have observed an ever-increasing occurrence of various disorders, often misdiagnosed in patients as psychosomatic:

  • Headaches, migraines
  • Chronic exhaustion
  • Inner agitation
  • Sleeplessness, daytime sleepiness
  • Tinnitus
  • Susceptibility to infection
  • Nervous and connective tissue pains, for which the usual causes do not explain even the most conspicuous symptoms.

“Since the living environment and lifestyles of our patients are familiar to us, we can see, especially after carefully-directed inquiry, a clear temporal and spatial correlation between the appearance of disease and exposure to pulsed high -frequency microwave radiation (HFMR), such as:

Installation of a mobile telephone sending station in the near vicinity

Intensive mobile telephone use

Installation of a digital cordless (DECT) telephone at home or in the neighbourhood

“We can no longer believe this to be purely coincidence, for too often do we observe a marked concentration of particular illnesses in correspondingly HFMR-polluted areas or apartments. Too often does a long-term disease or affliction improve or disappear in a relatively short time after reduction or elimination of HFMR pollution in the patient’s environment. Too often are our observations confirmed by on-site measurements of HFMR of unusual intensity.

“On the basis of our daily experiences, we hold the current mobile communications technology (introduced in 1992 and since then globally extensive) and cordless digital telephones (DECT standard) to be among the fundamental triggers for this fatal development.

“What we experience in the daily reality of our medical practice is anything but hypothetical! We see the rising number of chronically sick patients also as the result of an irresponsible “safety limits policy,” which fails to take the protection of the public from the short- and long-term effects of mobile telephone radiation as its criterium for action. Instead, it submits to the dictates of a technology already long recognized as dangerous. For us, this is the beginning of a very serious development through which the health of many people is being threatened.

“We will no longer be made to wait upon further unreal research results — which in our experience are often influenced by the communications industry, while evidential studies go on being ignored. We find it to be of urgent necessity that we act now!

“Above all, we are, as doctors, the advocates for our patients. In the interest of all those concerned, whose basic right to life and freedom from bodily harm is currently being put at stake, we appeal to those in the spheres of politics and public health.”

There are now thousands of scientific and medical studies showing that both malignant and benign tumors are a common result of chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields. In June 2016, the US federal government confirmed that cell phone radiation efficiently induces malignant brain cancers and Schwannoma heart tumors in test animals.1 Numerous other studies link the benign, but life-threatening, acoustic neuroma tumor to microwave electromagnetic fields.2

Since most cancers and tumors generally take some time to develop, they could well be considered a late EHS warning. In 2016, Olga Sheean of Canada published her personal story, which has gone viral on the Internet. A synopsis of her ordeal is here in a letter to the editor:

Cell Radiation, Parksville Qualcom News July 28, 2016

I used to love my cell phone, until it almost killed me.

I learned the hard way that cell phones/towers transmit harmful microwave radiation, which affects everyone, whether you feel it or not (Canadian doctor Magda Havas shows how it harms human blood within minutes of exposure): SEE THE YOUTUBE VIDEO HERE

For years, I had many disturbing symptoms, which I blamed on other things. But then I got a brain tumour, known to be caused by microwave radiation and I began to do the research.

The electromagnetic radiation bombarding us, 24/7 (from cell phones/towers, Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, etc.) is causing all kinds of illnesses, neurological disorders, early dementia, cancer, tumors, memory loss, pain, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, infertility, weight gain, thyroid disorders, personality changes and countless other problems. Thousands of Canadians are being affected, with more people falling ill every day as the radiation increases.

I moved to French Creek to escape the excessive radiation in Vancouver, which was making me very ill, only to find that a cell tower may be installed nearby. If that happens, I’ll have to move again or I won’t survive. If I were your daughter/mother/wife/aunt/sister, would you give up your cell phone for me, if it saved my life?

Please, dear neighbors, don’t make the mistake I made. Get the facts before it’s too late. Do not believe what some companies say about cell phones/towers being safe. They aren’t. And living near a cell tower will not enhance your existence.

Even if you don’t feel the radiation, it’s still harming you. The scientific proof of this is vast and irrefutable, and it’s only a matter of time before your body starts to show the effects. When you discover the truth, you’ll realize just how much you’ve been misled.

Americans who suffer from EMS have a functional disability because they are handicapped by man-made electromagnetic toxins in the environment. Adverse symptoms to these environmental toxins prevent many EMS sufferers from accessing areas of public accommodation.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a law intended to protect against discrimination based on disability. It affords similar protections against discrimination to Americans with disabilities, just as the Civil Rights Act made discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, and other characteristics illegal. In addition, unlike the Civil Rights Act, the ADA also requires covered employers to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities, and imposes accessibility requirements on public accommodation.

Among other things, the ADA ensures access to the building environment for people with disabilities. The ADA standards establish design requirements for the construction and alteration of facilities subject to the law. These enforceable standards apply to all places of public accommodation: commercial facilities as well as federal, state and local government facilities.

The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (United States Access Board) is a federal agency that promotes equality for people with disabilities through leadership in accessible design and the development of accessibility guidelines and standards for the built environment, transportation, communication, medical diagnostic equipment and information technology. The Compliance Board enforces the ADA and other laws associated with this legislation.

In 2005, the Access Board funded a study called the IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality) project of the National Institute and Building Sciences (NIBS). This project detailed various indoor pollution problems, solutions and recommendations. The published study:

  1. Recognized both chemical and electromagnetic sensitivities as important in the eyes of the law

  2. Recommended building designs and construction to provide a more healthful environment for both chemically and electomagnetically sensitive people

The study states:

“The Products and Materials Committee believes that particular attention is critical during building design to assure that the needs of chemically and electromagnetically sensitive people are accommodated to the greatest extent possible.”

Here are four important recommendations of this important report:

  1. Incorporation of a foil vapor barrier or other metal shielding into the walls around electric equipment that can reduce certain electromagnetic fields.

  2. Wireless (“bluetooth” type) connections should be avoided, or areas of their use should be “contained” by using foil-backed drywall or other incorporation of a foil or metal barrier.

  3. New construction should use twisted metal clad wiring and /or twisted wire placed in metal conduit.

  4. Fiber optic connectivity is preferred for computer networks communication because these data lines may be run without concern for stray emissions.

Electromagnetic pollution, which includes wireless radiation, is absolutely air pollution. It flows through buildings and through the tissues of human bodies. The reason that almost all buildings are now loaded with electromagnetic fields, especially those from wireless systems and devicesm is because most EMS sufferers have not yet learned how to press their legal rights for federally-mandated ADA protection from the wireless irradiation that makes them sick. Legal expert Deborah Koplad explains:

“What people who are getting headaches and other debilitating symptoms from Wi-Fi need to do is get accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and get transmitters shut off in crucial settings like schools, doctor’s offices courts, etc., so that they can function as they did before neurotoxic exposures were introduced into the indoor building environment. Sweden has formalized procedures to get this accommodation. Americans must press these claims with each institution they must access. It is difficult for those in the early stages of sensitization to understand that they are reacting to an environmental trigger and that the impairment they are experiencing is a functional impairment that can be eliminated by remediating the environment they are in. It requires a shift in thinking to grasp that this relief can be achieved by exercising their civil rights, not by bouncing from doctor to doctor who write hard-core pharmaceutical prescriptions without understanding the condition at hand or what the correct solution is (return to an electromagnetically appropriate environment that existed in buildings until recently). The EU acknowledged that the number of people who have manifested the syndrome [EMS] has increased exponentially since the recent practice of putting transmitters in buildings….Russia and Sweden both provide wings of hospitals without wireless so people who have developed EMS can access medical care.”

The US Department of Labor offers an excellent website for its Job Accommodation Network:

This is a resource for EMS people who need to work in an environment that does not trigger their symptoms. This site features a great deal of information, including how to request accommodation for EMS in the workplace!

Dirty electricity is a nickname for stray high frequency transients which ride along on 60 hertz power lines. These abnormal spikes, flowing along a conductor, deviate from the pure 60-hertz sine wave and produce both harmonic and non-harmonic transient components, exposing people to kilohertz radiation (thousands of hertz). These particular kilohertz waves have characteristics of both extremely low frequency radiation (ELF) and radiofrequency radiation (RF) associated with wireless telecommunications. Dirty electricity emerged as a problem in the late 1970s with increasing use of electronic devices that produce non-linear loads.

Many studies now link dirty electricity not only to EMS but also to human cancers, Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), multiple sclerosis and diabetes. Renown researcher Dr. Samuel Milham has completed many research projects which implicate electromagnetic fields in a wide range of health problems. One of his best-known studies documents a link between dirty electricity in a California middle school to a huge cancer cluster among teachers who suffered cumulative exposure to high frequency voltage transients in their classrooms.

Dr. Magda Havas, a Canadian medical researcher, has produced human medical studies showing that there appears to be a relationship between dirty electricity and elevated blood sugar in some individuals. Dr. Havas presented four case studies that revealed marked changes in blood sugar associated with exposure to high frequency voltage transients. It is the Type 3 diabetes that is most influenced by environmental electromagnetic pollution.

In other studies, Dr. Havas has shown that people with multiple sclerosis (MS) may be able to get relief from the symptoms and some may be able to delay, halt or reverse the progression of this neurological disease by reducing exposure to high frequency voltage transients, as well as radio wave radiation from cell phones and wireless technology.

For many health reasons it is critical for people to learn how to measure, avoid and mitigate dirty electricity.

Dr. Martha Herbert is a pediatric neurologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and a director of TRANSCEND Research Program for neurodevelopmental disorders. She is also an assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Herbert is considered leading expert on WHY safer spaces are so important for everyone!

Her 2015 paper titled Connections in our Environment: Sizing up Electromagnetic Fields in Autism is referenced by 92 medical and scientific papers. EMS may actually be an early warning system when electromagnetic radiation (EMF), and especially radiofrequency and microwave radiation (RFR), inflicts damage upon the various systems of the body. Dr. Herbert’s work provides massive documentation on exactly how electromagnetic radiation can damage the brain and body in these very important ways:

  • EMF/RFR lead to cellular stress, such as production of heat shock proteins, even when the EMF/RFR isn’t intense enough to cause measurable heat increase.

  • EMF/RFR damages cell membranes and makes them leaky and unable to maintain important chemical and electrical differences between what is inside and outside of the membrane. This degrades metabolism in many ways, making it inefficient.

  • EMF/RFR damages mitochondria. Mitochondria are the energy factories of our cells. Mitochondria conduct their chemical reactions on their membranes and when those membranes get damaged, the mitochondria struggle to do their work. Mitochondria can also be damaged through direct hits to their chemical assembly line. When mitochondria become inefficient, it especially affects the brain since electrical communication and synapses in the brain demand huge amounts of energy.

  • EMF/RFR creates “oxidative stress.” Oxidative stress occurs when the system can’t keep up with the stress caused by utilizing oxygen, because the price we pay for using oxygen is that it generates free radicals. These are generated in the normal course of events, and they are “quenched” by antioxidants like we get in fresh fruits and vegetables; but when the antioxidants can’t keep up or the damage is too great, the free radicals start damaging things.

  • EMF/RFR is genotoxic and it creates free radicals which damage cell membranes, DNA, proteins and anything else they touch. When free radicals damage DNA they can cause mutations. When radicals damage proteins they can force them to fold up in peculiar ways. Diseases like Alzheimer’s are related to the accumulation of mis-folded proteins and the failure of the brain to clear out this biological trash from its tissues and fluids.

  • EMF/RFR depletes glutathione, the body’s premier antioxidant and detoxification substance. On the one hand EMF/RFR creates damage that increases the need for antioxidants, and on the other hand they deplete those very antioxidants.

  • EMF/RFR damages vital barriers in the body, particularly the blood-brain barrier, which protects the brain from things in the blood that might cause damage. When the blood-brain barrier gets leaky, cells inside the brain can die off.

  • EMF/RFR can alter the function of calcium channels, which are openings in the cell membranes that play a huge number of vital roles in brain and body.

  • EMF/RFR degrades the rich, complex integration of brainwaves, and increase the “entropy” or disorganization of signals in the brain – this means that they can become less synchronized or coordinated.

  • EMF/RFR interferes with sleep and the brain’s production of melatonin.

  • EMF/RFR contributes to immune problems.

  • EMF/RFR contributes to increasing stress at the chemical, immune and electrical levels, which we experience psychologically.

Nikola Tesla

Technological Genius and Inventor

Described by many as a “genius,” Tesla is still recognized as one of the greatest technological scientists of all time. Tesla suffered late in his life from a very severe illness believed to be due to intense neurological damage from exposure to high levels of various electromagnetic fields induced for his experiments. The Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiography of Tesla, written by his close friend John O’Neill, described his extreme sensitivities:

”To doctors he appeared at death’s door. The strange manifestations he exhibited attracted the attention of a renowned physician, who declared that medical science could do nothing to aid him. One of the symptoms of the illness was an acute sensitivity of all the sense-organs. His senses had always been extremely keen, but this sensitivity was now so tremendously exaggerated that the effects were a form of torture. The ticking of a watch three rooms away sounded like the beat of hammers on an anvil. The vibration of ordinary city traffic, when transmitted through a chair or bench, pounded through his body. It was necessary to place the legs of his bed on rubber pads to eliminate the vibrations. Ordinary speech sounded like thunderous pandemonium. The slightest touch had the mental effect of a tremendous blow. A beam of sunlight shining on him produced the effect of an internal explosion. In the dark he could sense an object at a distance of a dozen feet by a peculiar creepy sensation in his forehead. His whole body was constantly wracked by twitches and tremors. His pulse, he said, would vary from a few feeble throbs per minute to more than a hundred and fifty. Throughout this mysterious illness he was fighting with a powerful desire to recover his normal condition.”

Tesla died in 1943. Today medical science would recognize his symptoms as multiple sensory up-regulation which is very common in acute cases of EMS.2 The most common conditions of sensory up-regulation are:

  1. Photophobia and/or Scotopic sensitivity syndrome (visual sensitivity)

  2. Hyperacusis (heightened sense of hearing)

  3. Hyperosmia (heightened sense of smell)

  4. Hypergeusia (heightened sense of taste)

  5. Hyperesthesia/Photosensitivity (heightened skin sensitivity)

  6. Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (extreme sensitivity to environmental chemicals)

  7. Vibroacoustic Disease (VAD) (systemic pathology from low frequency noise)

Per Segerback

Former Ericcson Engineer for Mobile Technologies

Per Segerback is a Swedish technology engineer who lives in the Swedish outback to better cope with his extreme electromagnetic sensitivity. He is seen holding a special suit which protects him from falling unconscious when exposed to any type of electromagnetic radiation. Popular Science magazine reported:

“Segerbäck was once an elite telecommunications engineer. He worked for Ellemtel, a division of the Swedish telecom giant Ericsson, for more than 20 years, leading an engineering group that designed advanced integrated circuits for prototype telecommunication systems. He used the newest and most advanced computer and telecom equipment available, the kind of stuff only Ericcson and the Swedish military had access to. He was, as a result, up to his eyeballs in a non-ionizing radiation bath, from computers, fluorescent lights and the telecom antenna located right outside his window. He noticed his first symptoms — dizziness, nausea, headaches, burning sensations and red blotches on his skin — in the late 1980s, a decade into his telecommunications research work. All but two of the 20 or so other members of his group reported similar symptoms . . .”

Guglielmo Marconi

Italian electrical engineer known for his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission, often credited as the inventor of radio

By the turn of the Twentieth Century, Marconi had developed the world’s first permanent radio station on the Isle of Wright. Marconi was extremely ill throughout his adult life concurrent with his unrestricted exposure to powerful radio waves of many frequencies. Family members who lived with him also suffered extreme illnesses. Here is a synopsis of their suffering:

“As early as 1896, after a year and a half of experimenting with radio equipment in his father’s attic, the previously healthy 22-year-old youth began running a temperature which he attributed to stress. These fevers were to recur the rest of his life…..On March 16, 1905, he married Beatrice O’Brien….Looming over the house, two hundred antenna wires stretched out from a center pole like the spokes of a great umbrella more than one mile in circumference. As soon as Beatrice settled in her ears began ringing. After three months there she was ill with severe jaundice. When Marconi took her back to England….she was pregnant….Her child had spent most of its nine months of fetal life bombarded with powerful radio waves and lived only a few weeks, dying of “unknown causes.” About this time, Marconi himself collapsed completely, spending much of …1906 feverish and delirious. Between 1918 and 1921, while engaged in designing short wave equipment, Marconi suffered from bouts of suicidal depression…..Between 1924 and 1937, while helping to develop microwave technology, he suffered as many as nine heart attacks, the final one fatal at age 63.”

Matti Niemela

Former Nokia Technology Chief in Finland

Niemela is a European engineer who was involved in the development of the world’s first mobile phones and Wi-Fi connections. After working in Finland as Nokia’s Chief Technology Officer for ten years, Niemela developed intense illness from microwave radiation and was eventually diagnosed with MS, which he believes is a result of his radical occupational exposure to electromagnetic exposure: “The irony is that I’m no longer able to use any of those devices that I had been developing.”

Extremely interesting about Niemela’s story is his fear of going public with his illness. This fear is undoubtedly experienced by countless other people who sufffer EMS symptoms in silence for political or economic reasons.

Niemela says: “I’m scared to talk about this in public, because I do not want to be labeled as crazy.” While working for Nokia, he felt that he had to remain silent: “You couldn’t talk about it within the company. Yet, among the staff, it was speculated whether the radiation could cause damage. However, no one dared to bring it up, because it could get you fired….These things have been kept silent for too long. I hope it will become possible to discuss the symptoms openly, and without fear.”
